Thanksgiving

The kids and I have been doing a fun unit study on Thanksgiving this past week. We've learned some fun stuff and one of the little projects was for them to find fun little "Did you know" facts. Here are a few that we found interesting:

1. The Pilgrims only bathed once or twice...a YEAR! The thought bathing was unhealthy.

2. They did not celebrate Christmas (or Easter) like we do.

3. They did NOT eat turkey at the first Thanksgiving feast! They ate duck or goose! For that matter, they didn't have mashed potatoes or cranberry sauce either!

4. About half of the original 102 Pilgrims died the first winter.

5. The Mayflower was never intended to be a passenger vessel; it was a merchant ship. There were actually two ships that left for the New World; the Mayflower and the Speedwell (which was the passenger ship). The Speedwell leaked so badly that they had to go back and leave it; and everyone going on the journey had to cram into the Mayflower!

Let's remember to give thanks to our loving and merciful God this Thanksgiving; we have SO much to be thankful for!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Hey Jill :) Fun Unit Study!! I am in the midst of studying Colonial America and did you realize that those same people that did not bathe regularly also did not wash their clothing very often? :P

It was considered wasteful to wash their common clothes because they were used for everyday work...and then their Sabbath clothing was more expensive and they were worried about ruining the cloth so they never washed it. They would wash all their undergarments about once a month or so...

...so this Thanksgiving I am thankful for Maytag and Tide ;) lol

Kate...thanks for commenting! :) And to answer your question, here's a quote from one of the websites we were using to find info:

"Being Separatist Christians, they believed that church holidays and rites such as Lent, Easter and Christmas were corruptions based on pagan celebrations."

Plus, during their first Christmas in 1620, they were too busy building their shelters to worry about Christmas. :)

Wow! Some stuff I DO remember from school! I remember learning these things and being shocked (esp. at the shower thing!).
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. :)
